The table below contains the relative offense, defense and net ratings of every championship team from 1955 to 2025 in the regular season and the playoffs. The data is from Basketball-Reference. To obtain the total ratings for each team, a 50/50 weight was given to the regular season and postseason. While arbitrary, this weighing produced a list that largely passes the smell test. Teams from 1955-1966 and 1967-1983 are given respective boosts of +3 and +1.5 due to playing fewer rounds in the playoffs. Basically, not having a 1st round against a weak 8th seed means these teams’ playoff ratings are generally substantially lower than teams in latter eras without this modifier. Keep in mind that this metric doesn’t account for team and opponent injuries so obviously some context should be added when attempting granular analysis.
